In 2002 NewcastleGateshead commissioned a scoping study to develop a visitor information initiative to promote NewcastleGateshead as one destination with one visitor information system and one management and maintenance system.
City id and Cartlidge Levene were chosen to work with the steering group to develop the initiative and the results have already made an impact. The results? The new Quay link transport system (although not fully utilised yet), Walk Ride maps and street furniture have all contributed to an improved visitor experience in the city.
The work has also been acknowledged by the design community with a number of awards including Creative Review Annual 2006 best in Book and the Howard Smith Paper Graphic Design Chairman’s award.
Their approach is to develop unique design, information and wayfinding solutions to fully integrate people, movement and places and Newcastle City Council are currently in discussions with City id as to phase 2 of the project. Other projects include Bristol Legible City and a new wayfinding system for the Barbican theatre.
Design Event have invited Cartlidge Levene and City id to give a talk on their work as part of Architecture Week.
