The Essential Attributes of the Graphic Designer /
Adrian Shaughnessy
Dance City, Newcastle: Tuesday 3rd June, 6pm
Whether you’re new in the game or have been running your design studio for years – in today’s unsteady climate, what does it take to be a successful graphic designer?
Adrain Shaughnessy, the self taught graphic designer and author of How to be a Graphic Designer, Without Losing Your Soul, will be reviewing essential attributes needed by the modern graphic designer dealing with the competing demands of creativity versus client accountability. Addressing questions such as:
How can designers balance business discipline and creative freedom?
What qualities are needed to produce good work and make a living?
He will also be discussing work from his new book Cover Art By:, a survey of current music graphics.
Well experienced in his field, Adrian spent 15 years as creative director of Intro, the design studio he co-founded before moving on in 2004 to pursue an interest in writing, and working as an independent design consultant. Today he runs ShaughnessyWorks, a consultancy combining design and editorial direction.
Adrian has written and art directed numerous books on design including the Sampler series, a trio of books devoted to radical music graphics.
He is currently working on a follow up to his book, How to be a Graphic Designer, Without Losing Your Soul entitled A User’s Guide: an A-Z of Graphic Design and is editor of Varoom: The Journal of Illustration and Made Images, and writes regularly for Eye and Creative Review. He is a contributing writer to Design Observer and avant-garde music magazine The Wire and has a monthly column in Design Week.
