Emily Forgot. Amy Dover and Alaric Hammond’s illustrations beautify much of todays popular consumer culture, yet an uneasiness pervades these partially defined, often surreal reflections of contemporary life, nature and collected memories. Contrasting in style yet coherent in their story telling the artist’s share a common practice of working largely in monotones. 'Night Shade' is presented entirely in black and white. By collectively rejecting the use of colour the works are immediately timeless in context, simultaneously suggestive of past, present and future.
The collected drawings, collage and printmaking produced for this exhibition are bound together by beguiling acts of violence and animalism, masked by childish playfulness, mysticism and beauty. From explosive pattern, meticulous line drawing and laser sharp simplicity, fragments of narrative emerge offering a fleeting insight into a compelling, compulsive world that somehow slips between our day-to-day experiences.
