My ‘Scaffolding Range’ currently on display at Design Event is a showcase of Bracelets, Brooches, Necklaces and Earrings which are reflective of our ever changing Urban Environment. My focus has been on the forms of the industrial city of Manchester, my hometown. Being heavily influenced by imagery of scaffolding and structures I seek to deconstruct what I see and create exciting, unusual forms which have culminated in a range of contemporary, wearable Art pieces. The ‘Scaffolding’ Range seeks to interact with the wearer through moveable parts and to contrast the visual references of strength and rigidity. I use a clean and simple colour palette to create simple yet elegant statement pieces.
With the urban environment as my inspiration I create contemporary wearables derived from structures and scaffolding.
My collection consists of three ranges, the ‘Cube’, ‘Scaffolding’ and ‘Tube’ ranges which reflect the forms of the industrial city of Manchester. I explore structures and the forms and detail I can achieve through deconstructing them. I was also inspired by Italian Jewellery after a trip to Milan. The clean, simple yet elegant forms much of the Jewellery adheres to really influenced me and the way I work. My collection itself consists of brooches, necklaces, earrings and bangles and are in themselves pieces of wearable art reflecting an ever growing industrial landscape.
I primarily work with Brass, using various types of tubing and constructing them to create unique, handmade pieces. I then plate my pieces to prevent tarnish and to make the pieces more wearable and luxurious.
Within the ‘Scaffolding’ Range currently on display at Design Event, I was most heavily influenced by structures and Scaffolding. Forms from the imagery of construction I have taken are assembled through using different types of tubing which are then hinged together to provide movement and contrast the rigidity of my pieces. ‘Scaffolding Brooch’ for example uses hinging to allow the wearer to interact with the little moving ladder part. The use of black cord also acts as a contrast to the tubing I use, creating a restricted yet striking colour palette I use across this range. Screw fastenings which are made via the Lathe are also incorporated for ease of wearing and all elements of my pieces remain integral to the design and ideas of the range. As a maker I really enjoy interaction between the wearer and my Jewellery and have strived to achieve this throughout all the pieces.
